We are delighted to announce that we have just won a Best in American Living Award (BALA) in the Custom Home category for this beautiful home located in the Ramble Biltmore Forest development. We’re grateful to the architects, engineers, and subcontractors we partnered with to create this amazing home. Most of all, we’re grateful to the clients, who trusted us with their time, vision, money, and future.
For 37 years, the BALAs have honored the most creative and talented building professionals in the US and beyond. BALAs are awarded by the National Association of Home Builders. This group represents the largest network of residential builders and developers in the US. Bluestone Construction has always been a member of the National Association of Home Builders. We are also proud members of a Builder 20 group called the Pacesetters.
Brief history of the project
Three Manhattanites—an artisan baker, a fashion consultant, and an avid art collector—decided to retire to Asheville and created the perfect home from which to enjoy the art scene, the craft foods, and the mountains. The home, located near the Biltmore Estate, is now filled with their vast art collection and was designed to bring in lots of natural light to compensate for years of cramped Manhattan living.
The exterior is mostly Old World brick and stone that, when combined with the black metal-clad windows and the steep pitch roof, gives the home a chateau-esque feel with contemporary finishes. The home fits well on a gently sloping lot, affording a nice balance of privacy and strong prominence from the street. The rear lot has a private firepit area for social gatherings.
The interior is a very modern feel that creates many spaces filled with light from the multi-pane windows to showcase the artwork. Challenges included creating two equally prominent owners’ suites, achieved by placement on each level with separate rooflines, and balancing the tastes of three separate owners in a cohesive manner.
The 4947 heated sf home flows well from one space to another but there are plenty of private spaces for both owners and guests and ample areas to display the artwork. The 1.1-acre lot is heavily wooded but selective thinning created room for plenty of sunshine to fill the home. Thoughtfully constructed to meet the owner’s needs, the home welcomes both natural light and friends to enjoy the art-filled spaces that are both calming and inspiring.
