Why Greenville Is The Best Place In South Carolina To Build Your Luxury Home

Greenville is the fastest growing metro-area in South Carolina and, according to US 2016 census data, the fourth-fastest growing city in the US.  In recent years it’s been named the 10th Best Place to Live in the US and listed among the Top Ten Best Downtowns in the country by Livability. Greenville was named the 13th Best City for Young Professionals by Forbes, and it made Conde Nast’s list of Best Small Cities in the US.  It also made Travel + Leisure’s list of Most Underrated Cities and it’s 50 Best Places to Travel in 2018 list.  It ranked 22 in Best Places to Live and 26 in Best Places to Retire by U.S. News. The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic Traveler, The New York Times, Money Magazine, and US News Travel have all sung the city’s praises in the past three years.

You could say Greenville is having a moment. This small-to-medium sized city (population 69,000, with a greater metro area of nearly a million) has been hailed by foodies, nature-lovers and artists alike. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s less than a three hour drive from both Atlanta and Charlotte. But you may never want to make that drive, since downtown Greenville has plenty of sidewalk cafes, bookstores, galleries and boutiques to keep you entertained. If traveling is your thing (sometimes you have to leave home to appreciate home!), there’s an Amtrak station and an international airport. And if you have children, Greenville’s public schools are some of the best in the state. The median age of residents is 37, but the city thrums with youthful energy, because there are six colleges in the metro-area.

These are some of the reasons Greenville is vibrant and thriving—the perfect city for you to custom-build your custom home. But there are plenty of other reasons, as well.

Play Outside Year Round

Temperatures are moderate, but Greenville residents enjoy four distinct seasons, with lots of green space to explore. The $15 million, 32-acre Falls Park is right downtown, in the historic West End. It includes trails, gardens and the award-winning Liberty Bridge, which spans the tumbling falls of Reedy River.

There’s also the 400-acre Lake Conestee Nature Park, with 12 miles of trails, and the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail—a greenway popular with commuters as well as leisure bikers and joggers. The over 3,000-acre Table Rock State Park is only a half hour away, offering mountain views, waterfall hikes, swimming holes and stunning fall foliage.

Get Creative…

Or bask in the creativity of your neighbors. Southern Living called Greenville “South Carolina’s city of the arts.” Greenville has its own symphony and professional ballet company and regularly hosts touring theater companies and concerts.

There are multiple three-day music, art and food festivals throughout the year (Fall for Greenville and Artisphere are two of the biggest), as well as an annual Shakespeare Festival and a 10-day comedy festival. You can take classes such as metal-working and painting at Greenville Center for the Arts, which also hosts First Friday Art Walks, and the Greenville County Museum of Art is nationally renown for it’s collection of American work.

Be a Good Sport

Fall is football season, and if you really want to see some local spirit, check out the annual game between hometown rivals—Clemson University versus the University of South Carolina. There’s also a minor league feeder for the Red Sox, the Greenville Drive, as well as two other professional sports teams—the Swamp Rabbits (hockey) and the Greenville Triumph (soccer).

Eat Your Heart Out

Southern Living calls Greenville “a foodie’s paradise.” Vogue calls it “the south’s newest food city.” There are over 120 locally owned restaurants, plenty of breweries, and an annual three-day food, wine and music festival called Euphoria that draws some of the biggest chefs in the US.

A Strong Economy To Safeguard Your Investment

Greenville is flush with Fortune 500 companies and has an ever-growing presence in the manufacturing, distribution and tech sectors. In fact, it has more corporate headquarters than any other city in the region, despite being much smaller than cities such as Charlotte and Atlanta.

Greenville’s unemployment rate is two percent, which is nearly half that of the national average. According to Zillow, home values rose nearly five percent last year and they are predicted to continue to rise in the metro area. So if you want to built your luxury house in a city with amazing entertainment opportunities, lots of opportunities to get outside, plenty of hospital and healthcare options and great public schools, there’s no time and place like Greenville/2020.
